Cyrus Field: Trans-Atlantic visionary
The Field brothers of New York were astonishingly successful. David Dudley Field, Jr. was the preeminent lawyer of his day, perhaps any day. He not only represented the most powerful men of his time, he gave us the Field New York State Codes in 1848, subsequently adopted by most states and the federal government, forever changing the nature of the American legal system. England used the Field codes to reform English law throughout the British Empire. Stephen J. Field, helped found Marysville, California, became a California legislator, and served as a justice on the California Supreme Court until Lincoln appointed him to the U.S. Supreme Court--a seat he held for a record 34 years! One brother was president of the Massachusetts State Senate, another built bridges, still another a prolific author. Cyrus Field, however, was the brother who left the deepest imprint on the nation and the world.
